HCI quotes

“The big art of design is to make complicated things simple.” - Tim Parsey

“Good design, when it’s done well, becomes invisible. It’s only when it’s done poorly that we notice it. Think of it like a room’s air conditioning. We only notice it when it’s too hot, too cold, making too much noise, or the unit is dripping on us. Yet, if the air conditioning is perfect, nobody say anything and we focus, instead, on the task at hand.” - Jared Spool

Think of how you learn, study, and work. You read a book, watch videos, listen to an online lecture on your laptop or mobile phone, do a team project with other students and communicate with them on KakaoTalk. All of the activities related to education and work involve interaction, and in many cases HCI.

Education is one of the typical interactive activities as people learn from people or learn from teaching materials (books, video clips, …). The role of interaction in the learning process is huge as the knowledge is transferred to the learner through interaction. If the interaction has big issues, it will impact the learning process negatively. Hence, HCI experts are in a big role regarding the development of new technologies and services for education.

For many years, the learning environments and classrooms have been mostly using traditional teacher-centered concepts, where the teacher has only used technology for one-way communication. But this is now changing rapidly and new interactive and immersive technologies are taking a bigger role in education. Metaverse, VR, and AR have the potential to disrupt the learning environments. How does VR/AR based concepts change the interaction?

In these videos, we will look at technologies that are being used in education and work. Also, we will look at future scenarios and think of how the education and work will change in the future.

Try to keep thinking the detailed (= decomposited) interactions between humans and computers in education & work.
